Grief & Loss: Understanding the Process and Finding Support

What Is Grief?

Grief, loss, and bereavement are deeply personal experiences that can leave us feeling lost and overwhelmed. When they occur, we’re often forced to rebuild our lives in a new reality - one without someone or something we deeply valued.

Emotional Journey

Grief brings a wide range of emotions, including:

  • Shock and confusion

  • Sadness and anger

  • Feeling overwhelmed or disoriented

  • Moments of calm followed by renewed distress

  • Gradual reorganization and healing

This process isn’t linear. People may move toward acceptance, then backslide, and repeat this cycle many times. That’s completely normal - it reflects the ongoing effort to reshape life and identity after loss.

Types of Grief

Grief can take many forms, including:

  • Anticipatory grief (e.g. terminal illness)

  • Loss of a colleague

  • Loss of an unborn child or infant

  • Loss of a beloved pet

  • Loss of a cherished item (e.g. a family heirloom)

Uncomplicated vs. Complicated Grief

Some grief follows a natural healing path (uncomplicated), while other forms may be prolonged or more intense (complicated).
