Young people are often misunderstood or unfairly judged based on their actions. Yet behind those behaviours lies a complex journey of identity, belonging, and emotional development.
The Nature of Youth
Adolescence is a time of exploration - of self, of relationships, and of social norms. Peer influence and group dynamics can shape decisions, sometimes without full awareness of the consequences. There's often a perceived “safety in numbers,” which can mask individual vulnerability.
Many young people struggle to articulate their feelings in ways that match their emotional experiences. Living in the moment, they may lack the broader context needed to make sense of their circumstances or communicate their needs clearly.
At home, in school, and within society, youth are constantly processing expectations while trying to carve out their place in an adult world that demands increasing independence.
The Changing Landscape
While many navigate this developmental maze with support from peers, educators, and family, recent years have introduced new challenges. The impact of COVID-19, rising housing insecurity, employment instability, and cost-of-living pressures have left many young people feeling uncertain and less hopeful about their future.
Media coverage of global crises - combined with heavy engagement on digital devices - has contributed to a decline in mental wellbeing and creative thinking among youth. Research continues to highlight these concerning trends.
For those without strong family connections or living in poverty, the path is even more precarious. Barriers to education, nutrition, stable housing, transport, and access to positive adult role models make it harder to grow, thrive, and build independence.
Understanding Before Guiding
In this climate of uncertainty, it’s more important than ever to approach youth with curiosity rather than judgement. Genuine interest in their perspectives - especially when grounded in open, respectful dialogue - has been shown to significantly improve engagement.
Youth behaviour is shaped by a mix of past experiences, internalised expectations, and the narratives they've absorbed from others. These influences can distort self-perception, particularly when early life has been marked by trauma, discrimination, or learning challenges.
What Helps
When working with youth, we must ask open-ended questions, listen actively, and seek to understand the forces that have shaped their worldview. This includes their hopes, fears, and aspirations for the future.
In therapy, Tim and his Team collaborate with young people and their families to identify pathways for growth - whether that’s strengthening relationships, exploring vocational options, or building self-confidence and a more empowering self-concept. Success in this work depends on trust, rapport, and a deep appreciation of each young person’s unique story.
“Support begins with understanding. Let’s take that first step together.” Whether you're a parent, educator, or young person - your voice matters.
